Interdental Brushes
The need for correct interproximal cleaning
Interproximal brushes are the most effective tools for removing biofilm from interdental spaces. Their use alongside regular toothbrushing has been clinically shown to reduce plaque and gingival indices.
A toothbrush alone only cleans around 60% of tooth surfaces; the remaining 40% corresponds to the interproximal area. Interdental hygiene is therefore essential to remove the biofilm that accumulates in these hard-to-reach spaces. Left unchecked, this buildup can contribute to the development of tooth decay, gum disease, and periodontal conditions. Despite this, interdental cleaning is often neglected or performed incorrectly, largely due to the difficulty many people experience when using these products.
Selecting the correct size of interproximal brush for each space is key to effective cleaning. The brush should fit snugly within the interdental space so that the filaments - not the wire – makes contact the tooth surfaces. If the brush is too small and fits too loosely, it will fail to generate sufficient friction against the proximal tooth surfaces, leaving biofilm and food debris behind.
In some cases, the use of an antiseptic in the interproximal area may be beneficial. Applying an appropriate antiseptic gel directly to an interproximal brush before insertion can enhance gingival and periodontal outcomes, particularly for patients with elevated inflammation or infection risk.
For areas where interproximal brushes cannot be used due to limited space, dental floss, tape, or oral irrigators offer effective alternatives - providing solutions for a wide range of patient needs and preferences.
Cleaning between the teeth is a fundamental part of any daily oral hygiene routine. It is especially important for patients with orthodontic appliances, where food debris and plaque can accumulate around brackets and wires. Consistent interdental cleaning helps prevent tooth decay and gum disease at every stage of life.
